Ernest Smolej

I have been part of the team at Fendalton Eye clinic since May 2007. My role in the clinic is clinical coordinator, a role that has my involvement in all aspects of patient care and examination from the initial visit, to treatment and aftercare.

In 1993 I completed a Bachelor of Applied Science ( Orthoptics ) from the University of Sydney. After graduation I spent four years working with general ophthalmic practices and Flying Doctor Service for rural NSW. In 1997 I decided to enter the specialised area of refractive surgery. I spent ten years working with leading laser refractive surgeons in Sydney before moving to Christchurch to join Dr Kent & his team. I enjoy the privilege of being able to help many patients achieve visual freedom from glasses and contact lenses.

In my spare time I love being in the outdoors with my wife and two young boys so the move to the South Island of New Zealand was a perfect choice. I enjoy fly fishing, tramping, and skiing.

In February 2008 I also had LASIK at Fendalton Eye Clinic. I can now enjoy the outdoors and not have to worry about wet, fogged up glasses or irritated dry eyes with contact lenses. All the simple little things in life are now clear again, swimming with my children or waking up to see what time it is on my alarm clock clearly without having to put on glasses – it’s the way life should be.
